The Mandalorian became a turning point in cinematic history — the first large-scale production to fully embrace real-time virtual environments projected on an LED volume. This innovation replaced traditional green screens with immersive, camera-reactive digital sets rendered via Unreal Engine. Pixela Labs was brought on to ensure the nDisplay system — responsible for synchronized multi-machine rendering — functioned with pixel-perfect precision and stability throughout filming.

Scope of work

Pixela Labs was tasked with supporting one of the most critical elements in the virtual production pipeline: ensuring flawless synchronization, calibration, and performance across multiple render nodes powering the LED wall.
The challenges included:
- Maintaining consistent framerate across dozens of meters of LED panels
- Calibrating virtual cameras with real-world tracking systems
- Minimizing input lag and visual artifacts
- Achieving in-camera realism without post-production
Pixela Labs developed custom configuration templates, synchronization scripts, and hybrid calibration workflows — in close collaboration with Epic Games, LED engineers, Lucasfilm VFX teams, and on-set technical directors.
