At Coachella 2022, one of the world’s most innovative live shows blended augmented reality with stage performance at an unprecedented scale. Among the key AR elements was The Grimes fairy — a real-time animated avatar brought to life through Unreal Engine. In collaboration with Xite Labs, Pixela Labs contributed motion refinement, animation cleanup, and real-time engine integration, helping transform raw mocap data into a seamless, emotionally expressive performance.

Mocap Character Cleanup
Scope of work

Xite Labs brought Pixela Labs on board at a critical stage to handle the entire motion pipeline — from raw mocap processing to Unreal Engine-ready animation.
The Grimes fairy required not only technical polish but also performance nuance: any animation glitch or delay would break immersion during the high-resolution AR broadcast. Pixela Labs executed motion layer cleanup, skeletal refinement, gesture polishing, and final retargeting — all in close sync with Xite Labs’ real-time visual production workflow.
